Behind every iconic fashion house is an innovative designer who can see beyond today’s trends to dictate those of tomorrow. For Toronto-based company Honey Matthews, that trendsetter is Carolyn Thompson.

The seed for Carolyn to devote her life to fashion was planted at just three years-old when she would mimic her mother as she sewed clothing to save money. But Carolyn’s would be a unique journey that took her from dressing dolls as a child and revamping store-bought clothes as a teen to creating awe-inspiring sketches that, as a young adult, convinced her to step into the realm of design.

After spontaneously sketching 30 fashion designs in one night and appropriately titling the would-be line The Legacy Begins, Carolyn inadvertently founded her business, Honey Matthews. With a leap of faith, the budding designer began to research the fashion industry.

Devoted to learning everything she could about fashion management, Carolyn read various books, attended seminars, networked and participated in government-funded business programs. In 2005, after conducting extensive market research, Carolyn launched her debut line to an enthusiastic reception from Toronto’s urban industry. The local success came quickly for Carolyn, who donned Honey Matthews the intersection “where urban culture meets chic fashion”.

After three collections, many custom pieces, 15 showcases, an appearance on Toronto’s Breakfast Television, celebrity clients (Nik Pace America’s Next Top Model’s 5th cycle, rapper Big Page, chairman of the Harry Jerome Awards, Karyln Percil; among others); and a collaboration with Italian men’s wear designer Lou Myles Disegnatore, Carolyn hit a speed bump.

The fashion designer stood at the crossroads of continuing with her business or acquiring an education in another field. After much contemplation, during which she continued designing, and a two-year break, she is back at the helm of Honey Matthews. With a seasoned business team, Carolyn is aiming to raise the profile of the brand on the international stage.

Currently, she is putting the finishing touches on her latest collection titled “ABE”. The all-black collection draws inspiration from the luxury often exhibited in European cultures as well as hip-hop and goth. It features textured coats, skirts, tops and dresses of leather, sheer black material, satin, silk, and cashmere.

With an objective of understanding the beauty of women and providing clothes that enhance it, Carolyn Thompson is catering to the everyday woman — one memorable design at a time.
